Sweet Summer Pow Wow

Darrell Dennis • 1 hour 30 minutes • 2024 • Canada • English

A charming love story about two young people who meet cute on BC’s Pow Wow circuit. Jinny (Tatyana Rose Baptiste) is 17, beautiful, and destined for law school — that is, according to her mom, Cara, who is Chief of the Coyote Lake Tribe. But what Jinny really wants to do is dance. Then there’s Riley (Joshua Odjick), from the rival White Bluff Indian Reserve. Chief Cara knows he’s trouble from the moment she lays eyes on him…

Around the edges the film points to issues like addiction, diabetes, and generational trauma, but at its heart this is (as the title suggests) a sweet, affirmative romance about attractive and likable teenagers finding their way.

Director Biography - Darrell Dennis

At the age of 17, Darrell Dennis walked into his first professional audition and walked out with the lead role of Brian Potter on the hit CBC drama Northwood. Since then, Darrell has become a multi- faceted First Nations director, producer, writer, actor and comedian.

As a director, on APTN, Darrell directed every single episode of The Guilt Free Zone seasons 2 & 3 (26 episodes) as well as being head writer and lead cast member of that series. The Guilt Free Zone went on to be nominated for two Canadian Comedy Awards.  Over on the Global network, Darrell was the director of the filmed comedic segments on the nationally televised 2017 Indspire Awards while also serving as head writer, actor and host.

Darrell’s comedy heist feature film "The Great Salish Heist" written and directed by Darrell, and featuring Graham Greene and Tricia Helfer, is playing festivals and releasing theatrically in Canada.  Sweet Summer Pow Wow, his second feature, is also on the festival circuit and being released in theatres this fall.
