How can we adequately be protectors of the land if we do not speak its language? If we do not understand its seasonal shifts, its life cycles, its volatile nature? Our generation is doing the best we can to reclaim our cultural identity in a changing world, it starts by saying it slowly.

The Lines She Carries

The Line She Carries follows Inuk filmmaker and Indigenous Geographic Co-founder Crystal Martin as she reaches a turning point in her life, the end of her childbearing years. In Oolootie’s home, she prepares to receive her traditional tuniit, marking not only her skin but her journey through womanhood, identity, and survival.
Crystal speaks openly about the lasting effects of residential schools and how they attempted to erase Inuit culture, taking from women the right to carry their stories on their faces. Through her tuniit, she reclaims that right. Each line becomes a statement of resistance, a way to honour those who came before and to remind future generations that healing begins when we take back what was ours.

A remote Inuit community in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) faces the transformation of their winter sea ice by climate change.
Interviews with indigenous elders and hunters, some projected onto icebergs, are punctuated with Kalaallisut words describing their disappearing winter environment. Inscribed in the ice by the island's youth, they reflect environmental changes originating a world away.
With summer sea ice predicted to be lost from the High Arctic before 2050, the Inuit community's winter traditions are already changing dramatically.
Are we witnessing the beginning of sikoqqinngisaannassooq : a future without sea ice? Made in collaboration with the youth of Uummannaq Children's Home.

Inuusivut Sapirnaqtuq - Our Life is Very Tough is a short documentary that explores the devastation caused by coastal erosion in Tuktoyaktuk through the eyes of local Deva-Lynn Pokiak and researcher, Dustin Whalen as they work to better understand the erosion before the the community is forced to relocate.
Tuktoyaktuk, a small Inuvialuit community located in the Canadian high Arctic, is disappearing into the ocean. The community is eroding by an average of 1 meter per year and is on track to become the first community in Canada to be completely relocated because of erosion and rising sea levels.
